Buyer's Guide to Used Centrifuges
A decanter centrifuge separates solid materials from liquids in slurry and therefore plays an important role in wastewater treatment, chemical, oil and food processing industries. There are several factors that affect the performance of a decanter centrifuge and some design methods to be followed which are dependent upon given applications.
When buying a used decanter centrifuge, the following considerations should be made:
- the manufacturer of the centrifuge
- the material of construction of the centrifuge
- the capacity of the centrifuge
- the history of use of the centrifuge (including maintenance and repairs)
Some of the most trusted and reliable centrifuge manufacturers include:
- Alfa Laval
- ATM
- Bird
- De Laval
- Flottweg
- Heinkel
- Humboldt
- Hutchison Hayes
- Ketema
- Krauss-Maffe
- Rousselet Robatel
- Sharples
It is crucial that the parts of the centrifuge that come in contact with the contents (the "wetted" areas) be manufactured of stainless steel, or in chemical applications that corrosion-resistant metals (e.g., titanium or hastelloy) be used.
In the purchase of a decanter centrifuge, there are several
capacities to be considered, including:
- the feed capacity (the volume of product processed per minute by the centrifuge; ranges from 5 gallons per minute to 1000 gallons per minute)
- the motor for the bowl drive (ranges from 25 to 300 horsepower)
dimensional limitations (the footprint the centrifuge requires and the volume of space the entire system requires)
Finally, the history of the used decanter centrifuge needs to be considered. For example, centrifuges previously used to handle or process hazardous or corrosive materials may be the wrong used centrifuge for a food processor.
